ARCOmadrid 2016 will celebrate its 35th anniversary February 24–28. To mark the occasion, the fair has invited 35 major international galleries to participate in a special program entitled “Imagining Alternative Futures,” bringing together the galleries that over the years have played key roles in establishing ARCOmadrid as a nexus for international art world encounters. In addition to this extraordinary grouping of leading and historic galleries, ARCOmadrid 2016 will feature 169 galleries from around the world in the fair’s General Programme and nearly 40 galleries in the Solo Projects and Opening special sections, confirming ARCOmadrid’s ongoing role as a place where artistic discourse and the art market meet at the crossroads between Europe and Latin America, while also reflecting the strength of the rebounding Spanish economy.
Curated by María and Lorena de Corral, in collaboration with Catalina Lozano and Aaron Moulton, “Imagining Alternative Futures” will consist of booths of two artists, often differing significantly in age, representing each gallery’s historic program and future direction. Taken together, these wide-ranging pairings will give rise to a sequence of dialogues that reflect the major trends in the art world over the last 35 years, while at the same time casting a forward glance toward coming movements and tendencies. Galleries participating in “Imagining Alternative Futures” include Fortes Vilaça; OMR; Kurimanzutto; Lisson; Marian Goodman; Martin Janda; Jan Mot, Spruth Magers; and Zeno, as well as long-time ARCOmadrid mainstays such as Lelong, Christopher Grimes; Krinzinger; Mai 36 and Thomas Schulte.
The General Programme at ARCOmadrid 2016 will include 169 galleries from nearly 30 different nations, including nearly 50 galleries from Latin America and an increasing number of galleries from the Middle East. Galleries participating in ARCOmadrid 2016′s General Programme include Thaddaeus Ropac; Praz-Delavallade; Giorgio Persano; Marilia Razuk; Nathalie Obadia; Galerie 1900-2000; Alfonso Artiaco; Denise René; Isabelle Van Den Eynde; and Selma Feriani.

In keeping with ARCOmadrid’s long-standing policy, both the General Programme and the curated sections will emphasize booths presenting only one or two artists, thus offering collectors and fair visitors a unique opportunity for an in-depth look at some of the most up-to-date art being created at present. Galleries with single or dual artist stands in the General Programme include Barbara Thumm with Diango Hernández and Antonio Paucar; Barbara Wien with Jimmie Durham and Haegue Yang; Carlier/Gebauer Gallery with Maria Taniguchi; and Ivan Gallery with Greta Bratescu and Iulia Toma.
ARCOmadrid 2016 will also see a return of its well-received Solo Projects Focus Latin America program, directed by Irene Hofmann and Lucía Sanromán in collaboration with Maria de Pontes and Ruth Estévez. This year’s edition will be structured around two themes: Art and Time Intersections in Theatre, Music and Dance, and Subversion via Humour. With a total of 18 galleries, this year’s Solo Projects will feature work by artists such as Carlos Leppe, Camel Collective, Mercedes Azpilicueta, and Erika Ordosgoitti.
The Opening section at ARCOmadrid 2016 will include 18 emerging galleries, all younger than seven years old, curated by Juan Canela and Chris Sharp. Participating galleries include Daniel Marzona; Michael Jon; Agustina Ferreyra; Sabot; Samy Abraham; Joseph Tang; and Proyectos Ultravioleta.
